4 Ways to Change Lyrics in Suno Without Ruining the Song
So Suno gave you a song you love, but one line in the chorus has to go. You don't want a new song. You want this exact song with different words. There are four ways to do it, and I'm gonna rank them from my least favorite to the one that almost never misses.
Method 1: The Editor (my least favorite)
Click the three dots on your song, go to Edit, then Open in Editor. The editor separates your song out into its different sections. Select the lines you want to change, click Replace Lyrics, type your new words, leave the model on Smart, and hit Replace. Suno creates two versions you can preview, and you can commit the one you like or regenerate if you don't like either.
Here's why it's ranked last: the editor likes to change the melody along with the words. When I tested it, it changed the melody of my chorus completely, which is the exact thing I was trying to avoid. If you do get a take you like, go to Save As New Song and it'll save to your workspace. But stuff like that melody change happens often enough that I usually skip the editor.
Method 2: Suno Studio (the precise one)
Three dots, Edit, Open in Studio, and pick multitrack so Suno separates all the stems. Now you've got every part of your song on its own track: bass, drums, vocals, everything. You can solo each one and hear it by itself.
Here's the move. Find the section you want to change on the vocal track and click that clip. The lyrics show up in a panel on the right, so copy the part you're changing. Select just that region of the vocal track, switch Replace to Cover, and paste in your edited lyrics. Two details make this work way better:
- Give it the vocal description. Click your full song at the top so the original style prompt shows up, copy just the part about the vocals, and paste that into the style box.
- Match the model version. If you made the original in v5.5, do the cover in v5.5 too. That helps it keep the same vocal.
When I did this, it sounded way, way better than the editor. Same delivery, same melody, and it sounds like the same singer. You can barely tell anything changed. Once you're happy, just export it as a full song.
Method 3: Remix Cover (the quick one)
Drag your song into the remix box and leave it on Cover. Delete the styles box, make your lyric changes, then open More Options and set weirdness to zero, style influence to 100, and audio influence to 100. Those settings basically tell Suno to change as little as possible except the words you typed. No studio work, takes a minute, and it usually lands pretty close.
Method 4: The custom model trick (the 99.9% one)
This is a way I developed for when it really has to sound like the same song. You're gonna make Suno build an entire model around your one track:
- Download your song as a WAV file, because WAVs are higher quality than MP3s and quality matters here.
- Go to the model selector and create a custom model. Drag your song in at least six times. Yes, the same exact file, six times. You're making a model that's based on just that one song.
- Wait for it to finish building (you'll get a notification), then select your new model, drag your song in to remix, paste in your new lyrics, and keep weirdness at zero to be on the safe side. You can delete the style box too; with a custom model I don't think it really matters, because the model already knows the style.
Since the model was trained on nothing but your track, everything it generates pulls hard toward the original sound. Out of all four methods, this one gets closest to the same song with new words.
One last thing
If you're trying to get it to sound exactly the same as what you made before, you're gonna have a tough time. The custom model method works the best in my opinion, but sometimes you just gotta let it go. It's gonna be a little different, and that's fine.
